Inangahua College

Whites Aviation  1951

1965, has seen the birth of Inangahua College. The Reefton District High School had a long and honourable record of service and scholarship in the community. Upon this solid foundation the College must build for future years. The establishment of

the College has brought many advantages but at the same time greater responsibilities. We have before us a long building and development plan to bring the College up to the standard of other secondary schools in New Zealand

There are three essential ingredients in a school, the staff, the pupils and the buildings. The material and building needs can be met but the two most important factors in a good school are the calibre of the staff and the calibre of the pupils. The College has been fortunate in its inaugural year to be endowed with an excellent staff and two hundred very fine pupils. The loyalty that both staff and pupils have given to the College in this, its first year, augurs well for the future. With the hard work of the Committee of Management and the support of the parents and the community, I am confident that the coming years hold much in store for Inangahua College. Our motto "Tohe Ki Te Ako" (Strive to Acquire Knowledge) is our inspiration.

Inangahua College way officially opened by Mr Spiers of the Nelson Education Board on the ninth of March 1965. Mr Blair, the chairman of the Interim Committee of

Management, Mr F. Barltrop, the headmaster of the Reefton Primary School and former headmaster of the Reefton District High School, Mr Lowrey, and Mr Spiers spoke to the

assembled college pupils and staff, representatives of other schools in the district and members of the public. Mr Spiers assured the College of the combined support of the

Nelson Education Board and Mr Lowrey spoke of the role of the school in the community.
