Reefton Primary School
Ca. 1976
Following the 1965 transition of the Reefton District High School's secondary department to Inangahua College, Reefton Primary School (originally known as Reefton School) operated as an independent primary institution until merging into an area school in 2004.
History of Reefton Primary School (1965–2004)
Standalone Primary Status (1965): In 1965, the secondary department "translated" to become Inangahua College. Fred Barltrop served as the last headmaster of the combined high school before the split.
Expansion & Relocation: During the late 1960s, additional structures were moved to support local education, including the relocation of the Blacks Point school building to the college site around 1967.
Educational Environment: The school was noted for long-serving staff such as Mrs Ena Patterson, the infant mistress who taught generations of local children, and teachers like Dom O’Sullivan and Miss Murfin during the late 1960s.
The 2004 Merger: In response to declining rolls and financial pressures, the Ministry of Education merged Reefton Primary School and Inangahua College on 1 January 2004. Reefton Primary School was technically the "continuing school" in this legal merger to form the composite Reefton Area School, serving Years 1–13.
Site Repurposing: The original primary school building on Buller Road (constructed in 1933) closed after the merger. It later served as a polytechnic campus and gym before being converted into the Old School Suites in 2022.
